Kindness matters
Elderly people have been revered and respected for their wisdom and held in high esteem in society and looked after with great affection by the younger generation. Improved life expectancy in many countries and particularly in India saw a significant increase in their population in absolute terms. A large number of young and middle aged men and women of Kerala are working abroad and elsewhere in India for their livelihood and earning more wealth coupled with changing attitudes of youth towards the elders , as a result a large proportion of old people are forced to live alone with out adequate support and care. . Though some of them are financially sound , they do not get proper medical care and personal attention for want of reliable family members. The isolated feeling of these elder people would culminate in other health and psychological disorders causing social disequilibriums. Government machinery alone may not be sufficient to take care of this pressing problem .Other NGOs need to come forward to support this gap . Hence the need for establishment of elderly clinic and day care centres was strongly felt by the Lions Cubs International –District 318 A with the support of Lions Clubs International Foundation ( LCIF)
The beginnings
As the first District Governor of newly formed 324 E1 (2004-05) Lion R. Murugan had a vision of adding vibrant colours to the lives of elderly people; and he was fully committed to make it happen. Joining hands with other zealous lions of the District he strove hard meticulously to plan and execute to his long cherished dream - a house for the elderly people combined with community oriented service activities such as medical camps, Diabetic detection, skill development for youth and a meeting place of the Lions club members and local community.
A dream come true.
Lions Bhavan , the dream project of Lions Cubs International –District 318 A thus came true in the year 2004 and the first phase was completed in 2005. The ground and first floors of Lions Bhavan were completed in 2005 with generous contribution of Lions of District 318 A and LCIF. In 2007 the renovation of first floor and additional construction of second floor were done. Late. Lion.Dr.Shantha Madhavan came forward with her magnanimous donation which helped to greater extend to complete this additional construction. Today Lions Bhavan with its elegant facade of three storeys stands tall and warm in taking care of the elderly people . The elderly clinic is running well with the support of doctors from Lions fraternity namely MJF Lion.Stanley Jones, MJF Lion.Dr.N. Viswanathan and add Lion Dr.S.Sarika Sivaram
The Location
The Lions Bhavan is located in the Kovalam NH bypass at Thiruvallom which is 500 meters from Thiruvallom Bridge towards Kovalam. It is 5.5 Km away from East Fort and, 7 Km away from Railway Station. The distance from Airport and Kovalam is less than 7 Km. This property has a very high potential in value and location. The simple reason is that it is along the proposed highway to Tamilnadu and adjacent to the proposed Thiruvallam tourist village.
Our Request
Lions Bhavan is getting prepared to take up more challenges facing the society - especially the senior citizens. To meet this challenge capacity of the Lions Bhavan has to be augmented. This calls for not only monetary support; but also more active participation by lions of the District and other like minded organisations and institutions. Membership options are open to good standing members of any Lions Club. They can choose from the three categories of members mentioned under membership. Past one decade has been a really glorious period for Lions Bhavan. So many global leaders of the Lions movement, including International Presidents and International Directors visited Lions Bhavan and appreciated it as a shining example of what Lions and service minded people can do.
It is our earnest request to all Lions and Lions club to contribute liberally to this noble cause.
We also appeal the voluntary organisations and corporates to come forward to assist us in carrying forward our service activities in a bigger magnitude by your donations and derive the pleasure of service to the society. Contributions may please be made to Lions Foundation, Kerala.
